Pure cashmere
fiber length determines quality over time
Duvet, no jar
The Capra hircus laniger has a coarser, woollier outer coat, known as guard hair.
Beneath the guard hair grows a much finer and softer down, the duvet, which is collected and subsequently spun to obtain cashmere.
Generally, the younger the animal, the finer and more prized the fiber.
A goat, a comb, two hundred grams
Cashmere goats live on the high plateaus of Central Asia, where the temperature drops well below freezing in winter. To survive, they develop a layer of very fine down beneath their outer coat. That, and that alone, is cashmere.
It is harvested in the spring, during the molting season, by combing the animal by hand. An adult goat yields on average between one hundred and two hundred grams of fine fiber, which must then be cleared of coarse hairs before it can be spun. This accounts for the limited quantity of this material, and its price.
